trickster II (itsnotawigwam)
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Group Exhibition - Haggerty Museum of Art
Marquette University
Completed: 2019
Trickster is an installation made of wood locally harvested from Lynden Sculpture Garden and patinated copper mesh. It is the second in a series of installations that serve as Indigenous Land Acknowledgment. It was completed for a group exhibition for the Mary L. Nohl Artist Fellowship winners at the Haggerty Museum in Milwaukee, WI. The trickster is a character found in Indigenous stories. They are often of animal form with human traits. They never lose their “animal-ness” and thus teach us about our own flaws and human-centered thinking. This piece is a full-scale exploration of work that previously only existed in speculative drawings and models.
Trickster is an animal that exists without phylum.
Trickster revels in ambiguity.
Trickster loves the spectacle of exhibition
Trickster knows your museums are on stolen land.
Trickster never forgets.
